ICT - Vision and Implementation

The Pioneer Academy Trust is committed to providing an inspiring learning environment linking to national and global communities, maximising the use and application of ICT as an essential learning, assessment and communication tool. The school is adopting the policies on Information Communication Technology, E Safety and introducing the Global Gateway plans for linking with a School in Ghana. This long-term partnership will enable children to learn and explore the diversity of a different culture, stimulating learning and creative thinking.

The Information Communication Technology Policy sets out the vision and rationale to meet their aspirations for all children:

“Information and Communication Technology (ICT) prepares pupils to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are increasingly transformed by access to varied and developing technology.  Pupils use ICT tools to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information responsibly, creatively and with discrimination.  They learn how to employ ICT to enable rapid access to ideas and experiences from a wide range of people, communities and cultures.  Increased capability in the use of ICT promotes initiative and independent learning, with pupils being able to make informed judgments about when and where to use ICT to best effect and to consider its implications for home and work both now and in the future.”

This is underpinned by the key aim of producing learners who are confident and effective users of a wide range of ICT to support learning, progress and achievement.

At Belvedere, curriculum coverage and progression are planned through skills based lessons and the cross-curricular application of these skills through the International Primary Curriculum. Skills based lessons will follow the Newham scheme of works which is formed of six areas of learning from the following units:

  • Word Processing
  • Creating Pictures
  • Internet /Email
  • Handling Data
  • Data Logging
  • Giving Instructions
  • Multimedia
  • Graphic Modelling
  • Spreadsheets

The six areas of learning are broken down into weekly taught units, each half term and are differentiated according to year group to allow for the progression of skills.  The programme of study links to the QCA units of work; it also covers the National Curriculum areas of study.

As children work through the scheme of work their progress is recorded against short-focused tasks where appropriate and assessed in the integrated task. This assessment will be used to support teaching and learning.  We will keep children’s work in an ICT folder which will follow the children through the school.  The folders for each year group can be accessed on the shared network and will be readily available for monitoring by the subject leader and staff to ensure differentiation, progression of skills and achievement at individual levels.

There is an opportunity to make rapid progress in this area at Belvedere as the school has recently brought and provided 32 laptops and 16 new iPads.  Older laptops and computer are being restored; therefore there is a plentiful supply of equipment to enable ICT to be an integral part of teaching and learning. The importance of ICT as a teaching tool is emphasised in all policy documents and staff will be trained and inspired to use white boards and other technologies in their interactive learning.

The development of the ‘E’ Safety policy ensures a robust approach to safeguarding children and staff in using the Internet safely and responsibly. The detailed policy is in line with Government Guidance and provides an aide memoire to all stakeholders about the use of e-mail, dangers of cyber bullying and the robust permissions required to safeguard children.

All the children have recently been introduced to our new 'Virtual Learning Environment'.  It is only open to our school users, but the children must ensure they do not share their personal logins and passwords with anyone.  We will be moving towards putting all of their homework and projects on the VLE and it is also a way of sending out class reminders for events.   Please see the attached information sheet about the VLE - what it is, how the children use it and the benefits of using it.
