The Pioneer Academy Trust Board is constituted to create robust and challenging governance across our schools, realising the ambitions and aspirations for high achievement.  Building on the excellence of the quality of governance, the Multi Academy Trust Board will bring synergy to the leadership, management and policy framework for all schools.

The Trust board will hold the Governing Bodies accountable.

The Board will meet termly and comprise: the Stewart Fleming chair of governors; the Belvedere chair of governors; the Vice chairs of the governing bodies of Stewart Fleming and Belvedere; the Executive Headteacher and up to 4 member appointees.

The Board has overall responsibility for the management and administration of The Pioneer Academy: the operations of all schools, with some responsibilities delegated to the Local Governing Bodies of the schools. The Local Governing Bodies are legally functioning committees of the Trustees Board. They will meet termly and have their own committees, looking after the standards, resources and buildings and premises.

The Board also has sub committees for Staff Disciplinary issues, Complaints and Appeals and Pupil Exclusions.

Governors

The Pioneer Academy Trust recognises the intrinsic link between high quality governance and the quality of leadership and management of the school. It seeks to develop the role of governors to provide robust support and challenge, judging the impact of school leaders and all staff through the outcomes for pupils.

The Trust is ideally placed to appoint, train and develop high quality governors for Belvedere Junior School through using the partnership arrangements and the experience of Stewart Fleming governors, who were judged to be outstanding in the Ofsted inspection report. This provides an excellent platform for governors to use their skills and expertise across a broader canvas, whilst learning about key aspects of school leadership from a two different school perspectives. The Trustees have, in consultation with the Local Authority, considered the skills audit and analysis the Governing Body will require to challenge and support Belvedere Junior School and to work effectively across The Trust. An experienced governor from Stewart Fleming has been appointed and a Local Government officer with expertise in research and statistics has also been appointed. The local vicar will join the Governing Body to strengthen the community dimension. This is the platform for the required strengthening of the governance arrangements.

The governors work to these key principles:

  • To provide challenge and support to the Headteacher and staff of the school to raise standards and keep pupils safe
  • To champion high achievement for all pupils, with a particular focus on the ‘Corporate Parenting’ role held by all governors
  • To monitor all aspects of the school performance, with probity and integrity
  • To ensure they are trained to understand data and performance to give them insight into the progress the school is making
  • To bring and discuss the views and perspectives of pupils, parents, carers and the community
  • To take an active role in the committee structures, deploying key skills effectively to the benefit of the school and the Trust
  • To ensure proper practices and legal duties are discharged within the remit of the law and national guidance
  • To seek to optimise value for money services within the school and across the Trust schools

 

What do the Governors do?

Governors are very important in making sure that the school is fulfilling its purpose in providing an effective education for the children. The main aspect of the role is to be a “critical friend.” This is a bit of “governor speak” but describes the responsibility in that we are there to sense, check and monitor. Our job is to focus on those aspects that indicate the performance of the school, and also take a strategic view of where we want the school to get to. It is not focused on day-to-day running of the operational side or day-to-day issues.

The Governors do not intervene in the professional responsibilities of teachers, but they do agree policies which, when put into practice by the teaching staff, determine what is taught to children. These policies are available on the website or from the school office.

There are 3 key committees which make sure the Governors are able to carry out this role effectively: Resources, Achievement and Curriculum Pupils, Parents and Community.

Our work takes many forms: generating ideas in the committees, looking at the school action plan, understanding how targets are being met, monitoring the impact of our actions, ensuring the finances of the school are being properly managed and ensuring staff appointments are appropriate. Training is provided, normally by the Local Authority. There are lots of courses, ranging from general induction to specialised courses relating to the committees e.g. finance.

The full Governing Body meets at least once a term. Minutes of these meetings are displayed on a notice board by the school office.

How are Governors Elected?

The teacher governors are elected by and from the teachers at the school. They serve for four years. The parent governors are elected by the parents of all pupils at the school and must be the parent of a child at the school at the time of their election. If their child leaves the school before the end of their 4-year term of office, they do not have to stand down. When there is a vacancy for a parent governor, all parents will be notified, invited to nominate candidates, provided with information about the candidates and be issued with a ballot form.
